In Greece, outcry against Zoe “Zorro” Konstantopoulou, the new anti-system star

Benefiting from growing discontent with the conservative government and the dispersal of traditional left-wing parties, Zoe Konstantopoulou has made a remarkable return to the forefront of Greek politics. Her party, "Course for Freedom," has emerged as the leading opposition force.

A comeback with a flourish. An emblematic figure in the emergence of the left-wing Syriza party, in power in Greece between 2015 and 2019, appointed president of the Greek Parliament in 2015, Zoe Konstantopoulou left the party in 2016 to launch her own party, Course for Freedom. Having fallen back into political anonymity for several years, she was elected to Parliament in 2023, and her party now appears to be the country's leading opposition force, ahead of Pasok (Socialist Party), Syriza, and the Greek Communist Party.

“Konstantopoulou is now ranked first in the voting intentions of young people, young women, those who identify as left-wing and those who are in financial difficulty,” Kathimerini explains .

With voting intentions hovering around 15%, it benefits from voters' lack of trust in traditional parties and an "anti-system" aura that is conducive to attracting younger voters. With the Conservative Party paying the price for the Tempi rail crash , which killed 57 people in February 2023, "Cape for Freedom" acts as a magnet for a fragmented electorate from different parties," explains the major center-right daily.
